Become a Volunteer
During my time volunteering at STEP I have seen and began to understand the holistic approach that STEP takes to helping their students. As a volunteer, I was not only a tutor, but a mentor, a friend, and a peer role model as well. ,– Jennifer, STEP Volunteer 2006-2007

The Safer Tomorrows through Education and Play (S.T.E.P.) Program is looking for volunteers to assist youth in various areas of the program, grades 5 through 12. Help with just one area, or all of them, it’s up to you!
- Academic Tutoring
- As a tutor, you would have 1 or 2 one-to-one tutoring sessions with a child who we would match you with based on their needs and your knowledge and skills, and/or help students who drop-in with occasional homework questions.
- Leisure Activities
- As an activities volunteer you would organize and host indoor and/or outdoor games and sports/activities for interested students (number of participating students will vary, ranging from 5 to 20).
- Visual/Dramatic Art
- As an art counselor you would help students get involved in art, in any form. The STEP program provides all art supplies for students, and will do their best to provide required materials for art projects that you propose.
- Workshops (in any area suitable for youth)
- As a workshop facilitator you would prepare and deliver to the students a 1 to 2 hour workshop on a topic of your choosing (number of participating students will vary, ranging from 5 to 20). The STEP program will provide you with a space to host your workshop and can help with any materials you may need. Some examples of workshops are: anger management, self-esteem, conflict resolution, internet safety, creative writing, visual arts)
The STEP program is dedicated to help our volunteers build rapport with students through organized activities and annual events, so that all our volunteers have the opportunity to be role models for the youth at STEP, to help guide them through their individual difficulties and uncertainties. The STEP program welcomes diversity in language and culture in our volunteers, as it compliments the diversity of our students
