Community Maintenance Program

The Community Maintenance Program(CMP) is a generic aftercare program designed as a follow up for all national Correctional Services Canada (CSC) programs with a relapse prevention component. The purpose of the program is to review skills which are taught in the "feeder" programs, and try to apply the skills to problems, high risk situations and obstacles in the community which can lead to re-offending. The goal of CSC is for the CMP to replace existing maintenance programs so as to eventually become the primary after-care program. CMP consists of a cycle of 12 sessions, delivered at a rate of 1 session per week.

There are two types of sessions: skills review sessions and applied self-management sessions. Skills review sessions alternate with the applied self-management session. The applied self-management sessions follow a set structure; however, session content depends on the problems and high risk situations that the participants report. The skills sessions that are covered in the MP are: Working Towards Your Goals; Self-Management; Problem Solving; High Risk Thinking; Emotions Management; and Healthy Relationships. The number of sessions an offender is required to attend is determined initially by level of risk and subsequently by risk and treatment gains. Offenders can repeat the cycle as many times as required, depending on the risk and need.
