The 2006-2007 school year ended at STEP with a grand event — STEP’s Night to Shine, that took place on Tuesday, June 26th, at the Fairview Library Theatre. With the help of a generous donation of $5000 from Dion, Durrell, + Associates, the students at STEP had the opportunity to showcase their vast talents in front of their families and friends.

The magical evening began with the silent auctioning of art pieces created by STEP students’ hard work and creativity, followed by a talent show displaying just as much courage as it did talent.

The main performance, a theatrical production, was born from months of students working together with the support of volunteers and staff, from dozens of rehearsals to learning up to 100 lines a piece. The applause from all those who attended was a testament to the degree of mental and social challenges that was surpassed to accomplish such a feat.

The STEP program and all of its students hope to repeat this event again this year, with thoughts for it’s theatrical component a modern day rendition of a Shakespearian piece. Look for more information in late winter/early spring!

With the help of the RBC After School Grants Program, the STEP program hosted a Visual Arts Competition which took place on Thursday, November 2nd, 2006.

The students of STEP created dozens of unique and creative art pieces for the event. Sharon’s (grade 7) art piece was the grand prize winner of a $250 R.E.S.P. from RBC.

However, every student who participated was the winner of praise and recognition for their dedication, team-work, and talent that went into creating the event.  RBC took the opportunity to announce that the STEP program would be the receiver of a $38,000 grant, which they have repeated again this year!

Look for RBC’s next event coming in the fall, which is guaranteed to be fun and rewarding for students and parents!
